Going for Your Dreams

While working toward her CNA license, R3 Program guest Tammy performed her life skill in the warehouse sorting clothing donations.

Tammy, a guest in the Women’s Center, knew her future was going to be dramatically different after her husband passed away.

When she arrived at the Eugene Mission, she began a process of releasing the past and looking for a new job that would support her. She lacked the training and education to find work that was financially viable, and she says she was close to giving up.

“In the beginning, I felt like I had to get something fast or I would be staying at the Mission for too long,” Tammy recalled. “My navigators helped me set better goals so that I could find the kind of job I really needed.”

Tammy was connected to volunteer career counselor Tim, whose encouragement and guidance proved instrumental in her journey. She eventually entered the Lane County STEP Program, a job search and training program for people experiencing homelessness, and began to think about her long-held dream of becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.

She had nurtured this dream despite obstacles that had always gotten in her way. As she continued to work with her support team, she eventually enrolled in CNA training and earned her certification.

Every step of the way, Tammy says the women in the Women’s Center cheered for her and supported her.

“You have to be patient because God will provide,” Tammy shared. “He knew I needed this. When you’re in the right place at the right time, the door opens wide for you.”

She’s very proud of her accomplishments during her stay here. “Never give up hope,” she said. “You’re never too old to go for your dreams!”
