Yvette Diggs, 45, moved to Eugene from Houston in search of a bigger salary and a better life for herself and her 7-year-old son, Aydan Diggs.

But when she arrived last month, her two secretarial job offers fell through, and she and her son spent the next few weeks living at Campus Inn, watching their supply of cash wither.

“When you start to run out of money, especially when you have a little one, you have to find something,” said Diggs, who came from a middle-class background in Texas.

If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. 36 Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you.
