Joyce Hammon and her daughters Aubrey, 4, and Jasmine, 11 months, were homeless for half a year.

On Friday, they’re moving into a home of their own.

“I was never the person to ask for help,” she said, “but I know I needed it for me and my family.”

First Place Family Shelter said resources are limited at a time when demand is high.

“Resources are fewer, and the need is greater,” said Diana Wise, the shelter assistant director. “I’ve been at First Place for 8 years, and it’s the worst I’ve ever seen it. I get phone calls every day from people who have never been in this circumstance before, who are desperate, they’re afraid, they’re desperate, they’re in tears, and they don’t know where to turn.”

If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. 36 Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you.
